Introduction

I usually make it a habit to try to find out where new or inquiring customers found my company from. It gives me good information on what marketing channels are having success. A couple of months ago I got an inquiry about a job in my area and the caller was from Southern California. So, before I hung up the phone I made sure to ask “by the way, how did you find my company?”. To which he answered, “I told ChatGPT to give me a list of porta potty companies in the Bay Area and you popped up.”

Hmm… That was my first time ever getting that answer from one of my customers. Once we finished the call, I hopped on ChatGPT and starting typing in queries related to my industry, hoping my company would show up. While we did in some searches, I realized my competition was outranking me in the majority of search results. This is what led me to begin optimizing my site for AI-powered search engines.

Understanding AI-Powered Search Engines

Artificial intelligence is beginning to revolutionize the way that users search for information and products online. AI-powered search engines aim to provide more organized and relevant results to the user. These tools leverage machine learning and natural language processing in order to shift towards a more conversational search. Despite the recent rise in AI-powered search, Google remains the dominant search method online. However, as AI-powered search engines evolve, we need to adapt our SEO strategies to stay ahead of the curve.

The most commonly used AI search tools are Google’s Bard and OpenAI’s ChatGPT. These tools are starting the revolution of conversational search. Unlike traditional search engines that rely heavily on keywords and backlinks, they allow the user to ask more complex questions and receive detailed answers to their queries. AI-powered search engines integrate Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Machine Learning (ML) in order to process our search queries more effectively.

NLP enables these tools to better understand and analyze language in searches. It doesn’t solely look at keywords, it attempts to understand the relationship between words in order to determine user intent. AI aims to answer the specific questions presented by the user rather than generic keyword-related content.

The shift towards AI-powered search engines is resulting in a major evolution in how users search online. For business owners and marketers, this presents new challenges and opportunities. Traditional SEO strategies are not sufficient to remain relevant in search results. You need to be sure that your content aligns with AI’s emphasis on intent and user satisfaction. Understanding the mechanics of these search engines is important in creating your SEO strategy to ensure your website remains competitive in this new era of search.
